3 Must-Follow Instagram Feeds for Teen Yogis

Original article on Yoga Journal

Meet three young yoga teachers, who use Instagram as an outlet to share their passion for the practice.

    Lexi-1

    1. Meet Lexi Hidalgo (@lexxyoga)

For many teens, yoga is a great exercise and stress-reliever. But as 14-year-old Lexi Hidalgo is learning, it’s a great entrepreneurial platform, too. The Delray Beach, Florida, native is one of the country’s youngest certified Yoga and Stand Up Paddleboard instructors. Her positive, attention-grabbing daily Instagram posts reach 4,000 followers.

The cheerleader-turned-yogi discovered yoga while accompanying her mom to a heated class. “Yoga completely calmed me down and changed my life,” says Hidalgo. “A lot of people judge others at school. Yoga taught me to feel comfortable within my own skin.”

    LexiHidalgoSUPYoga

Hidalgo teaches a monthly Teen Vinyasa class at Ivivva of Boca Raton and is instructing at Kids’ SUP camps this summer.

Recently, athletic apparel brand, LunaJai, tapped her to be a brand ambassador. “Social media has helped me to build myself up. Before I started yoga, I couldn’t talk in person. Now, I post whatever I want to with confidence. Without Instagram, I wouldn’t have all the opportunities that are coming,” Hidalgo says.

    Kaya-Hughes-1

    2. Meet Kaya Hughes (@kayahyoga)

Like the ocean waves she resides by, yoga naturally flowed in to ninth-grader Kaya Hughes’ life. The teen, based in Encinitas, California, clicked with the practice two years back and lobbied a local studio to enter its teacher training program. “I didn’t know if girls would like how I taught, but over time I felt more comfortable and my teaching skills improved,” Hughes says.

Also a guitar player, Hughes’ music playlists set her yoga classes apart. “I wanted to use music that I listen to and connect with teens,” she says. She named her “Teen Spirit” class after Nirvana, for example.

    KayaHughesCamel

Hughes promotes her yoga work and lifestyle on Instagram, where she’s amassed 2,000 followers. “I use social media to share quotes I like and to connect with other girls my age who practice,” Hughes says. The yogi trendsetter has also caught the eye of activewear brand, Teeki, jewelry companies, and flash tattoo lines like Tats4Now, for whom she’s a brand ambassador.

While such attention has its perks, “I don’t see myself building on this. I’m interested in making my own music for yoga classes,” says Hughes, who is inspired by Bob Marley, Souljah, Foo Fighters, Michael Franti, and The Cure. As she continues her personal yoga journey, “I have a positive outlook, am super confident in who I am, and mindful of what’s right and wrong. I think I’ve helped people to come out of their shell, which is why I love yoga so much,” she says.

    Skylar-Dearden-1

    3. Meet Skyler Dearen (@skyleryoga)

Skyler Dearen can take the heat. At just 15 years old, the country’s youngest Yoga Alliance-registered hot yoga instructor treks a bold, heart-guided life path. A yogi since age 7, Dearen’s passion for the fiery practice was inspired by her single mother, a yoga teacher-turned-owner of the Radiant Hot Yoga studio, in Newport Beach, California.

“Yoga totally changed our lives. We’ve had hard times. Hot yoga offers an amazing emotional release. You get in to that hot room, sweat it out and let it go,” says Dearen, who completed a teacher training in 2013. “We trained in 105 degree temperature for weekends on end. I didn’t think I could physically and mentally do it, but jumped in,” says the ninth-grader. Her first time teaching a group of forty? “I walked in there and gave it all I had. You have to go for it and stay fearless to be that vessel for your students,” says Dearen, admitting she was nervous.

    Skyler-Dearden-3

After a family exploration trip to Thailand last year, Dearen made another gutsy life choice. “I decided I wanted to be homeschooled so I could do more yoga,” says Dearen, whose mom supported the switch. Dearen now attends an online, self-study program through Brigham Young University. She says she’s able to pull A’s and B’s, while taking or teaching yoga twice daily and has transitioned easily to her new routine. “All of my school friends come to my classes and we still hang out. I’m close with everyone at my studio. We’re a huge family,” she says.

Dearen chronicles her love of nature and sense of adventure on Instagram, growing her online following to over 2,000. Dearen dreams of opening up her own studio one day and hosting yoga retreats worldwide. She plans to inspire more teens to try yoga, too. “It’s such an amazing gift,” she says.

    Studio news! Service Package Changes

    To My Dear Yoga Family,

I want to begin by sharing that my heart is filled with gratitude and appreciation to you and your support of my studio. You have been loyal and true supporters of my life’s work in creating a studio with a foundation that is predicated to the healing and inspiration of everyone who walks through its doors. I’m blessed to have been in service now for two and half years and just signed a lease for my second studio which will open early next spring in Irvine at the brand new Los Olivos Market Place.

So many changes have occurred since my doors first opened and boy have I learned a lot. I remember wondering and second guessing if what was in my heart would translate into a business let alone a business that would provide for me and my girls. In the beginning I tried very hard to create an atmosphere that would cater to as many different preferences as possible.

I have sat down with my staff and we have extensively reviewed each package and service that we offer and it became apparent that we needed to make some changes to continue to offer a premium service to our most loyal students.

We will no longer be offering the Radiant Hot Yoga #1, Radiant Hot Yoga #2 and Gold package as currently understood.

We are going to combine all three of these packages into one offering a new Gold Package which will be the blending of the three. This will include the following elements; mat, yogi toe, hand towel, shower towel, water and mat service. We will be charging a monthly fee of $89.00 on top of your monthly yoga membership for this hybrid service.

The price increase for those of you who have our current Gold Package is due to significant cost increases at the studio. The reasoning is very simple, my cost for offering the original services is far greater than the service fee we were charging. Those of you who are on the RHY #1 and RHY #2 package will have to decide if you would like to sign up for a 6 month or 12 month auto debit for your membership. We will make this transition starting August 1, 2015. Those of you with our current Gold Package will be transitioned over to the new package unless you call and state otherwise.

By including all of the amenities into one package we will be able to offer this service to you going forward. I am working hard at streamlining my business so I can continue to be of service to more and more people in the world who are seeking a refuge of healing and hope. I deeply appreciate your understanding and support in this decision and hope that this change does not take away from your desire to continue using our special service packages.

How Radiant Hot Yoga changed my life... Interview with Clare B.

What benefits were you hoping to receive from your yoga practice?

I was involved in athletics when I was younger, but it had been a while since I’d found something that motivated me to keep coming back. I realized that the best process for me was being in a class and having someone to guide me.

I also wanted a form of exercise that toned my body and worked me from the inside out, rather than just built up muscle, and hot yoga has been the ultimate workout!

I have super tight hips and shoulders, and it is only through hot yoga that I feel I can get a full body workout and feel great after.” – Clare B.

    Clare-Bielecki-2

How has yoga and your practice exceeded your expectations?

I can’t even describe it – I’m definitely addicted! If I miss a day of class, I feel like something is absent from my day, and I have come to crave the heat and the openness it allows.

Coming to Radiant has truly become just as much a part of my routine as going to work. I have battled with running injuries off and on, and the best healing has come from consistent practice – yoga is my physical therapist.

It has motivated me in other exercise as well – I have always wanted to complete a half marathon, and with the self-motivation encouraged in class, I was able to take that to the road to train myself and finally complete a few races last year.” – Clare B.

How has yoga benefitted you off the mat?

Yoga has taught me that it’s okay to slow down – take a break to breathe and reboot. I have a hard time not going full force in everything I do, but there are certainly times my body has needed me to slow and I have ignored it.

Now, I don’t feel guilty taking breaks from activities in my life that may not be the best benefit, and try to ensure I am respecting both my body and my mental health. It is so true that each day is different, and I have started to notice how my behavior off the mat impacts my classes, and have made adjustments so that I get the most out of my practice.” – Clare B.

    Clare-Bielecki-1

Do you notice a change in your physical, mental, emotional and or spiritual body from a regular yoga practice?

Absolutely – I have definitely become more toned, and more in tune with the mind/body connection. I have taken note of how my behaviors can make for a really great or a not so great class – if I have to take a lot of breaks I really try to focus on why. I sleep better, my eating habits have become so much healthier, and I find myself talking about how awesome yoga is to everyone around me.” – Clare B.

    Clare-Bielecki-4

Have you tried other styles of yoga? What makes Radiant Hot Yoga your preferred place of practice?

I did Bikram for about a year when I first started yoga, and I have hopped around to other hot yoga studios, but have never felt as great as I do here at Radiant. Between the incredible heat, the energetic flows, and the amazing teachers, I couldn’t ask for a better environment for my daily workout. I can’t imagine being part of any other yoga family!” – Clare B.

How Radiant Hot Yoga changed my life... Interview with Mark H.

What benefits were you hoping to receive from your yoga practice?

At first my motivations were pretty simple, I just hoped to get in great shape. My girlfriend had been practicing hot yoga for years and had               developed amazing muscle definition as a result of hot yoga and I wanted the same thing for myself. Plus I thought it would a great activity for us to do together.” – Mark H.

    Mark-Hillebrandt-4

How has yoga and your practice exceeded your expectations?

My first class was with Darlene and it was amazing but it also pushed me to my absolute physical breaking point. I had to lie down several times to slow my heart rate down and recover. It was a very humbling experience.

When people ask what hot yoga is like, I tell them that physically it’s like running a half marathon in a sauna and mentally, it’s even harder.

Overcoming that mental hurdle though, has delivered incredible benefits that I never expected. I’ve learned to control my breath, and my heart rate but also my emotions and composure when faced with extreme situations. The classes are still just as challenging as they were when I started but they feel easier and even more rewarding because I’m different now and I’ve learned to control how I react to the heat and the postures. That part of me that has become different, that has become better, extends outside of yoga as well. I never expected it, but yoga has become a life changing experience for me.” – Mark H.

How has yoga benefitted you off the mat?

At Radiant Hot Yoga you learn to look inwards and get more connected to your physical body and your feelings. You learn that you are in control of your mind and body even when your surroundings are working against you. It’s not just talk, for me it was a real transformation that I had to make in myself in order to work through challenging postures and flows in the heat and humidity. I have been able to extend that internal focus and strength to my professional and personal life.

I run a global healthcare business for work and sometimes deal with difficult situations.

Just like in yoga, I now breathe through those situations while staying calm and focused and remember that I’m in complete control of how I react to the situation. I feel not only physically stronger than I ever have before but mentally, emotionally and spiritually stronger than ever before.

It’s a profound difference that my colleagues and loved ones have noticed and have told me they appreciate.” – Mark H.

    Mark-Hillebrandt-1

Do you notice a change in your physical, mental, emotional and or spiritual body from a regular yoga practice?

The physical change after coming to Radiant Hot Yoga and making yoga practice part of my daily life was dramatic and happened faster than I thought it would. I have gained muscle definition all over my body but also developed leaner, longer looking muscles. Nothing beats the flexibility though!

When I started I could just barely touch my toes with my legs straight. Now I can hold my legs straight and put my elbows on the ground! Mentally and emotionally the change has been even greater. In yoga class you clear your mind of the outside world completely for 60 to 80 minutes a day and focus on your internal self.

I can’t imagine life anymore without taking that time for myself. That one hour a day I take to focus on myself has made me a better, stronger person to all those around me for the other 23 hours.” – Mark H.

    Mark-Hillebrandt-2

Have you tried other styles of yoga? What makes Radiant Hot Yoga your preferred place of practice?

I briefly practiced hot yoga at two other studios before coming to Radiant Hot Yoga. I can’t emphasize enough how unique a place Radiant Hot Yoga is and the amazing energy created by the students and teachers. When you are in a class you feel absolutely inspired by the incredible people around you. The teachers and the students create an energy in the room that makes you want to give everything you have and push yourself to the absolute limit in every class.

I owe so much of my growth to the amazing energy and strength of Radiant’s teachers and students. It’s truly an environment of incredible people doing amazing things together as a family.

A special shout out to teachers Adham and Erica and the whole Radiant family, you are amazing and inspiring!” – Mark H.

    Testimonials

I actually had thought of every excuse in the book not to go! Money, time, long flight, don’t know anyone well enough to travel with, time off, etc…. It just took Yasi to say “Why not”. And so a life changing (or life altering) journey began with:

    • New friends
    • New experiences
    • New culture
    • New foods
    • New places
    • Time away
    • Meditation
    • Yoga
    • Connecting with self
    • Connecting with people

It was transformational. Especially because of all the reasons you come up with not to go. It just takes a decision to say yes and everything else falls into place. The only one holding you back is you.

Do it! Step outside your comfort zone. Make new friends. Grow. That’s truly what this trip was about for me. And no better group of people to do it with than my new yogi family!

    – Nancy Van Dyke –

My time in Thailand on the RHY yoga retreat is easy to put in one word; MAGICAL!

Combining the culture of the Thai people, the beautiful cliffs & ocean of Koh Samui and the amazing food and of course, yoga – my week could not have been any better. Yoga overlooking the beautiful cliffs of Vikasa, the sounds of crashing waves and the ocean breeze was beyond breathtaking. Connecting with everyone on the retreat, taking in the beautiful culture and exploring a Country that most had never been to was truly life-changing. The ability to travel and explore is something that I would recommend to everyone. You can truly find peace and connect with a deeper side of yourself and make lifelong connections!

    – Yasi –

If you told me a year ago that I was going to fall in love with yoga and go on a retreat to Thailand to practice yoga, I would believe you. I joined RHY about a year ago because I had knee surgery two years ago, and I did physical therapy for a year, but I wasn’t happy with the results. I tried to stay positive, but I was getting more and more frustrated. So I joined Radiant because it was close to my house and there was a groupon, and it changed my life!

Throughout the months I became addicted to yoga because my breathing got better, my knee felt better, and overall my entire body and spirit felt lighter, healthier, and happier. I didn’t take advantage of the retreat to Talum because I was still new to the studio and was a bit shy, but as I got to know the staff better, I told myself I would try to make it on the next retreat.

Not knowing what this retreat would bring, I signed up and wished for the best. In the months leading up to the retreat I met and became really close with my retreat roommate, who I now call my yogi sister. We planned our trip filled with activities and places to go before and after the retreat, along with a couple other yogis. The anticipation grew exponentially!

The day finally came, and as soon as we arrived at LAX, the bond between our group became even stronger. We were ready to embark on a beautiful journey together, and we were all there in support of each other. A few of us decided to get to Thailand early and explore Bangkok, which was amazing because we were able to venture in the city and bond closer in an intimate group.

Cynthia-V-RHY-Tulum-retreat-picThe island was beautiful. As soon as we landed in Koh Samui I knew I would enjoy the week ahead of relaxing island life. When we got to the resort we were greeted by friendly staff and immediately seated in our ocean view restaurant with a fresh coconut to drink. The views were spectacular! Everything you can see on google images was true and beautiful, and real, and right in front of me. Bright blue and warm waters, soft sandy beaches and a peaceful calm air barely begin to describe it. It was such a beautiful feeling to wake up and practice yoga by the beach, meditate, and listen to the waves crashing against the rocks right below our yoga room. Then we would have breakfast at the resort restaurant with a gorgeous view of what I can only describe as paradise. I look at pictures now, and I still can’t believe I was able to experience such beauty.

We lived each day in the present moment. We could participate in workshops, tours, shopping and exploring the island, or just chose to lounge around and enjoy one of many beautiful local beaches and infinity pools. It was as if we didn’t have to keep track of the time. It would all work out perfectly. The group became so close also, and we were all able to spend time together and bond in one common goal of unity. Great views, great food and drinks, and amazing company; I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a vacation.

I realized on the retreat that I was subconsciously trying to get away from everything, and that I was still holding on to negative things from the past that no longer served me. Although we were tourists and did lots of activities on the island, we also had plenty of time to work on ourselves inward. It was so refreshing to get away and evaluate what truly mattered. I was able to work on myself and accept myself, and appreciate all the small things around me. I came home a new person; a better person.

I cannot thank Darlene and Radiant Hot Yoga enough for opening up this opportunity for me. Once you go on a journey like this, nothing will stay the same.

    – Cynthia V. –

It has been 5 weeks since returning from our retreat to Thailand and not a day, not even an hour has gone by that I have not thought of my yoga family, our journey together and the impact this retreat has had on my heart.
It has taken me this long to give my testimonial because I was having difficulty finding the words that could possibly give justice to just how amazing this experience truly was. It was SO much more than Awesome or Amazing. It really was Life Changing!

Those are strong words! My heart changed in Thailand! My heart, my mind, my soul… Something happened over there! I can’t explain it, all I can say is GO.

If you have an opportunity to go on a retreat with Darlene and the Radiant yoga family, Go! GO GO GO!!!

7 Ways A Yoga Retreat Can Change Your Life

    Original article from MindBodyGreen

I lead yoga retreats all around the world. What I have found through my experience with this is that they are life-changing. You may ask, “Why would I want to go on a retreat rather than just simply a vacation?”

    Here’s why:

    1. You will fall in love

I fell in love at my last retreat.

I was surrounded by palm trees and magnificent ocean views and hammocks. Part jungle, part fantasy, my heart burst open and cracked in half with wild love. I was giddy with it.

Yes, I have been married for two years and no, it was not with my husband.

And yes, I love my husband deeply. Although it may not be him I am speaking of directly, he is, in fact, directly affected by this falling in love of mine, as it were.

    How can he not be?

When you embody love, anyone you come in contact with gets a little of it, whether they wanted to or not.

You will walk out of a room and they will stand there in awe, replaying your face in their mind, trying to memorize what it was that made them feel so good.

My husband reaps the benefits, you can be sure. I am more inspired, more full of life, happier, funnier (debatable), more patient, and more awake than I have felt in a long time.

What I realize now is that I can be in love, I can be love, full of all of it’s cracks and holes and laughter and quirks and inside jokes and not necessarily have to own it. I do not have to have each and every body who comes with me on my yoga retreats here in my apartment every day to allow myself to feel what I felt during the retreat.

You will make friends and chances are they will be friends for life. My retreats are famous for making families among friends.

You will fall in love with yourself again.

    2. You will know what it means to be courageous

I look at the people on my last retreat. One girl came all the way from Amsterdam, alone. All the way to Mexico with a group she didn’t know, having never done yoga in her life and leaving her children back home.

She had the courage to be imperfect and ask for private help from me with the poses. She had the courage to sit out and watch at times. She had the courage to make new friends and be vulnerable. My sister had the courage to leave two kids at home (one who has special needs and a very strict regimen) and  take a week just for herself. Something she had never ever done in her life.

Whether you have been to 50 yoga retreats or none at all, it takes courage to go away somewhere with a group of people and be vulnerable.

You may find that during the retreat you will do things that you are out of your comfort zone. I notice during my retreats that people feel more brave so they end up taking risks. Whether it is jumping out of a plane or allowing themselves to connect with someone more deeply.

    3. You will give wholeheartedly to yourself

The minute you sign up for the yoga retreat, your life starts to change. You have taken the first step in doing something just for you! I know that for myself it is not that often that I do something just for me. Even if you sign up with someone, you are sending a message to yourself that says “I care about you.” Taking time out for yourself, whether it’s a couple days or a weeklong retreat, is a magical way to remember who you really are. To escape the traffic and the emails and the work duties and to soak up the feeling of being self-loving.

    4. You will deepen your yoga practice

We hear that expression a lot. I know. When I say deepen I mean this: you will get on your mat without a care in the world other than your mat. At home, when we practice it’s always with the knowing in the back of our minds that there is somewhere to be. Like work. Like picking up the kids. When you are on a retreat, there is nowhere to be. There is just you and your mat and the loveliness that comes with being away from it all.

    5. You will see the world with new eyes

I lead retreats in Ojai, California, Italy, Mexico, Maui, and Bali, to name a few. What happens when you go away to any of these places during a yoga retreat is you experience them on a very conscious level. Most days you are doing yoga twice a day. There is an awakeness that occurs with so much yoga, one that causes you to open your eyes and see the world a little brighter. A little more clearly. When I go on vacation, I rarely do as much yoga as when I am on a retreat. There is a gift that comes with the practice of yoga. Being in Tuscany with this perspective is like nothing else. Bali, Hawaii, any of the places become more magical when you incorporate the body, breath and mindfulness that comes with your yoga practice.

    6. You will transform

During my Manifestation Yoga retreats, we journal during every single class. There is a transformation that occurs through this process. Whether you get clarity on what you want to manifest in your life or you have a breakthrough about how fear is holding you back, you will feel a shift occur.

There is something powerful about being away from your day-to-day life, among a group of like-minded people, eating amazing food (and drinking amazing wine if you are in my group), journaling as you do yoga classes and seeing the world with new eyes. There is something magical and powerful that you often cannot get anywhere else.

    7. You will have fun. A lot of fun!

Bottom line: you’ll have fun. If you’re with me (and most retreats, I’d assume), you’ll have the time of your life. You’ll have belly laughs and long naps and delicious savansanas. You’ll do something you have never done like take a Mexican cooking class or surf or try a handstand. You will relax deeply and play deeply. You will meet people you wouldn’t have met before and connect with them in a way that you wouldn’t trade for the world.
