How Radiant Hot Yoga changed my life... Interview with Egon

What benefits were you hoping to receive from your yoga practice?

Being 68 years old and having back and shoulder injuries, increasing my flexibility is a goal. Also, I wanted a good overall whole body exercise.” – Egon

RHY student of the month of January 2016: Egon Van Den Berg

How has yoga and your practice exceeded your expectations?

This practice is a 10 and in four years at different studios, I’ve never experienced even a 6 out of 10. I take the 80-minute classes and they offer a terrific challenge. It has cardio, strength building, and complete flexibility training. Also, I love to work up a great sweat, it feels very cathartic and detoxifying. After a kick butt class, the final savasana puts me in a meditative state.” – Egon

How has yoga benefitted you off the mat?

After working this hard, I eat healthier. I’m not going to have a cheeseburger or pizza after yoga. I also have more energy during the day and the practice is a great stress reliever.

No matter what the rest of my day looks like, I know I’ve done something great for myself by going to the hot room.” – Egon

RHY student of the month of January 2016: Egon Van Den Berg

Do you notice a change in your physical, mental, emotional and or spiritual body from a regular yoga practice?

FI have lost weight and firmed up. Most important of all, I have made a total commitment to yoga. I call it my three C’s: commitment, consistency, completion. To that end, I have made a total commitment to improving my practice. I divide my time between Austin, TX and Newport Beach. When I’m here I do the 80-minute class daily. This past summer I was here for 2 months, and I was able to practice daily for 56 straight days.

I know yoga is a personal thing and it’s not a competition, but if it were, I would come in last in form. My injuries limit what I can do in some postures. However, I have made a personal commitment on completion. Each day my goal is to get through the entire practice without any unscheduled savasanas. In 56 classes I only took a break twice, each for less that two minutes” – Egon

Have you tried other styles of yoga? What makes Radiant Hot Yoga your preferred place of practice?

I have tried Bikram, Vinyasa, Ashtanga and other variations. Some were not heated rooms, so no sweating. In some studios, instructors did their own thing so the practices varied greatly.

None of them were half the challenge of this practice, and I was never really motivated, so I didn’t go consistently. Some studios had as few as 6 students in a class. It was like going to a dance where no one showed up. No energy in the room.

Here, with 30 people in the classes, there is real energy in the room. In Austin I have never found a studio that offers what Radiant Hot Yoga offers. Besides the practice itself, all of the instructors are professional, consistent, passionate, friendly, helpful, and encouraging. I love them all. Even the members are friendly. It’s a real community. I’m so into it that I brought my daughter Gabby in and now she’s a Radiant Hot Yogi.

I want to thank Darlene for creating this fabulous experience and honoring me as the male yogi of the month.” – Egon

How Radiant Hot Yoga changed my life... Interview with Tiana

What benefits were you hoping to receive from your yoga practice?

I have been practicing yoga for the last twenty years – yes, twenty – and even though my dedication to it has faltered at times, I have always come back to incorporating yoga in my life.

The benefits for me have been mostly physical as I have pushed my body in athletics over the years and often needed the time and focus to let my body stretch and heal. This is what yoga does for me – it allows me the time to slow down, breathe and give my body the opportunity to heal.” – Tiana

RHY student of the month of January 2016: Tiana Roman

How has yoga and your practice exceeded your expectations?

One of the greatest benefits of yoga for me is its ability to challenge the body in new ways with every practice. Every day is different for me at Radiant because I have been working through a knee injury so I don’t know how my body will respond on a daily basis.  Most days I am in tremendous pain but I still come to morning practice because I always feel better after and the pain in my knee is usually relieved.” – Tiana

RHY student of the month of January 2016: Tiana Roman

How has yoga benefitted you off the mat?

Yoga is my downtime. It is my me time, which is always a good thing so I can have a clear head and strong body when I leave to start my day. I am a wife, a mother and I work full time – I will always need an outlet where I can clear my mind and just be me.

Yoga has always been there to help me just BE. I don’t care how I look, how much I sweat or if I can’t be perfect in the poses. What’s great is yoga doesn’t care either and that is awesome. :)” – Tiana

RHY student of the month of January 2016: Tiana Roman

Do you notice a change in your physical, mental, emotional and or spiritual body from a regular yoga practice?

For me, yoga reminds us to be good to each other and we are all unique in our own ways. We push our bodies together without judgement and strengthen our minds and bodies so when we leave our mats, we feel more present and more capable in the world.” – Tiana

Have you tried other styles of yoga? What makes Radiant Hot Yoga your preferred place of practice?

I have been coming to Radiant since Darlene opened her doors a few years ago. I truly enjoy the environment she has built for her clients, her instructors and the people who attend the studio.  It is a tranquil place for me to unwind, reflect, challenge my body and visit with friends.” – Tiana

Thank you my dear Yoga Family

To My Dear Yoga Family,

I don’t know where to begin so I will simply start with a deep heart felt thank you!!! I have never felt so much love, compassion and support in my life than during these past several months. Most of you are aware of my physical trails and struggles that I have gone through but for those who don’t I would like to explain my absence from the studio for the past four an half months.

I have been dealing with chronic pain in my right flank area for years but never knew the exact cause of the pain. Well the pain became insurmountable and after being rushed to the emergency room, I found myself under the care of a wonderful doctor who determined that my right kidney was obstructed. I was blessed to receive care from the top urologist in Orange County who after much testing suggested that I undergo a re-sectioning to save my kidney which had atrophied loosing much of its functionality.

After receiving two different stents I underwent surgery on my birthday this past September. The surgery was intensive and physically exhausting. But I am ecstatic and relieved to say that it was a huge success and I have never felt as good as I do today. My recovery has been going well and I ready to return to my love and joy my studio.

The out pour of love, prayers and continued support I received from my yoga family was beyond any thing I ever could of imagined. I received cards, flowers, gifts, food, and visits for so many of you it is hard is to keep track of. My heart is so full of love and gratitude for all of you and I could not have survived this without you.

Well now that I am done with this trail in my life I will be back at the studio and can’t wait to see all of your beautiful faces that I have missed so deeply. I will be back soon teaching again and look forward to having all of you in my classes (please make sure you regularly check the schedule). I have so much love and gratitude to give to each and everyone one of you. I am beyond words excited to be teaching again and doing what I love to do and that is to guide, inspire, support and motivate my students to be the best version of themselves. I know that all of you continue to make me the best version I can be.

With that said please know that I am filled with gratitude for all of you and can’t wait to see you all at the studio again real soon. You got me through this very difficult time in my life and now I am healthy and ready to give back to my yoga family.

From my heart to yours namaste.

Studio news! Service Package Changes

To My Dear Yoga Family,

I want to begin by sharing that my heart is filled with gratitude and appreciation to you and your support of my studio. You have been loyal and true supporters of my life’s work in creating a studio with a foundation that is predicated to the healing and inspiration of everyone who walks through its doors. I’m blessed to have been in service now for two and half years and just signed a lease for my second studio which will open early next spring in Irvine at the brand new Los Olivos Market Place.

So many changes have occurred since my doors first opened and boy have I learned a lot. I remember wondering and second guessing if what was in my heart would translate into a business let alone a business that would provide for me and my girls. In the beginning I tried very hard to create an atmosphere that would cater to as many different preferences as possible.

I have sat down with my staff and we have extensively reviewed each package and service that we offer and it became apparent that we needed to make some changes to continue to offer a premium service to our most loyal students.

We will no longer be offering the Radiant Hot Yoga #1, Radiant Hot Yoga #2 and Gold package as currently understood.

We are going to combine all three of these packages into one offering a new Gold Package which will be the blending of the three. This will include the following elements; mat, yogi toe, hand towel, shower towel, water and mat service. We will be charging a monthly fee of $89.00 on top of your monthly yoga membership for this hybrid service.

The price increase for those of you who have our current Gold Package is due to significant cost increases at the studio. The reasoning is very simple, my cost for offering the original services is far greater than the service fee we were charging. Those of you who are on the RHY #1 and RHY #2 package will have to decide if you would like to sign up for a 6 month or 12 month auto debit for your membership. We will make this transition starting August 1, 2015. Those of you with our current Gold Package will be transitioned over to the new package unless you call and state otherwise.

By including all of the amenities into one package we will be able to offer this service to you going forward. I am working hard at streamlining my business so I can continue to be of service to more and more people in the world who are seeking a refuge of healing and hope. I deeply appreciate your understanding and support in this decision and hope that this change does not take away from your desire to continue using our special service packages.
