How Radiant Hot Yoga changed my life... Interview with Frankie W.

What benefits were you hoping to receive from your yoga practice at Radiant Hot Yoga?

At the time I first signed up I was really wound up from several months of 90 hr work weeks. I was feeling like I was full of sand, my muscles ached all the time. I was hoping to stretch and release that tension, if nothing else go to physical exhaustion so I could actually relax, not just zone out. I was feeling defeated, sluggish and overwhelmed. I was looking for something to help me out of that feeling.” – Frankie W.

RHY student of February 2017 - Frankie W.

How has Yoga and your personal practice exceeded your expectations?

Not only was I able to relieve the stress from work, but also some of the aches and pains I’ve had for years have gone away. I had a muscle cramp in my right leg for a few years, I just though that was the way it is, I took muscle relaxants when it got really really bad. All that has changed and I haven’t taken those pills since I’ve started practice. Most importantly, being ADHD my whole life I have gotten a peaceful mindset during a one hour session that it would normally take me 4 or 5 hours of walking to do.” – Frankie W.

How has Yoga benefited you off the mat?

I am more peaceful and focused, I stand up and sit up straight. I am more present in my body. So I have had an eating disorder since I was little, I’ve spent my life gaining and losing the same 100 lbs over and over and over. One of the things that I’ve noticed is that I am aware of my body, I don’t feel like I am fighting against it anymore.

It has helped in my being present in my body and paying attention to my postures created an awareness I hadn’t had before.” – Frankie W.

Do you notice a change in your physical, mental, emotional, and/or spiritual body, from a regular Radiant Hot Yoga practice?

Not only has my physical body changed and become stronger, I have good posture now, my mental clarity and focus has been like never before, but there has been emotional benefits as well. Most recently, out of the blue, without any conscious effort on my part, a really painful childhood memory came out one day during class. I didn’t freak out but just let it ride like a wave, knowing it would pass and I cried for the first time about that issue. It’s never returned, and I feel like I made peace with that moment in my past.” – Frankie W.

Why is Radiant Hot Yoga your preferred studio/home away from home?

Do you remember that TV show Cheers? It’s nice to go where everyone knows your name. The staff at the studio are a direct result of Darlene’s intention of creating not just another yoga studio but a community for those who choose to call Radiant their home. I am so honored to call RHY my home studio.” – Frankie W.

What is your favorite yoga pose, and why?

Favorite Yoga Pose? Downward dog. When I first started I couldn’t do it for more than a few seconds and had to use my fist as it hurt my hands to hold myself up. Now, I feel so powerful in that position. My upper body strength is so different than when I started.” – Frankie W.

How Radiant Hot Yoga changed my life... Interview with Emily O.

What benefits were you hoping to receive from your yoga practice at Radiant Hot Yoga?

I first started coming to Radiant a few months after I moved here by myself from across the country. I was feeling very lonely and my job was stressing me out. My mom encouraged me to get back to my roots and take a yoga class. I needed to calm my mind, destress and center myself internally.” – Emily O.

How has Yoga and your personal practice exceeded your expectations?

I have always liked yoga, but it wasn’t until I came to Radiant did I truly fall in love with it. I actually crave my mat every single day. Physically, my body is more flexible than I’ve ever been in my life, but mentally I am so much stronger, calmer and happier than I ever thought possible.” – Emily O.

How has Yoga benefited you off the mat?

The breathing has really helped me off the mat. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, stressed or anxious, I know I can always come back to my breath. Just like in the room, my breathing has become a calming thing for me. It keeps me balanced and centered, even when life around me gets crazy!” – Emily O.

Do you notice a change in your physical, mental, emotional, and/or spiritual body, from a regular Radiant Hot Yoga practice?

I come to Radiant almost every single day. In addition to the physical changes I’ve seen in my body from the challenging workout, I have noticed so much internal change from the “work in”. My emotional, spiritual and mental health has improved drastically. Not only do I feel more centered and calm, but I also feel more confident. I have a more positive outlook on situations in life, and a more relaxed mindset.

Friends and family have even noticed a difference, and it all circles back to what I’ve learned in yoga; being present and focusing on the beauty in life. There are too many beautiful, positive things happening in the world around us to be tainted by negative or anxious thoughts!” – Emily O.

Why is Radiant Hot Yoga your preferred studio/home away from home?

Radiant is most definitely my home away from home. I moved here from Ohio by myself. I knew nobody and felt very alone. At one of the most challenging times in my life, I found Radiant.

Everyone here was so welcoming and kind. I immediately felt safe here; like I finally had a place where I belonged in Newport Beach, my own little safe haven on my mat!! I have made some incredible bonds with some truly amazing people at this magical place of healing.” – Emily O.

What is your favorite yoga pose, and why?

My favorite pose is definitely standing bow. It is always so challenging for me, yet I feel so strong and confident whenever I am in it!” – Emily O.

Have you tried other styles of yoga? What makes Radiant Hot Yoga your preferred studio?

I’ve been practicing hot yoga for over 5 years. I’ve tried other types of yoga along the way but they haven’t provided the physical and mental needs that I am looking for. How Radiant Hot Yoga changed my life... Interview with Egon

What benefits were you hoping to receive from your yoga practice?

Being 68 years old and having back and shoulder injuries, increasing my flexibility is a goal. Also, I wanted a good overall whole body exercise.” – Egon

RHY student of the month of January 2016: Egon Van Den Berg

How has yoga and your practice exceeded your expectations?

This practice is a 10 and in four years at different studios, I’ve never experienced even a 6 out of 10. I take the 80-minute classes and they offer a terrific challenge. It has cardio, strength building, and complete flexibility training. Also, I love to work up a great sweat, it feels very cathartic and detoxifying. After a kick butt class, the final savasana puts me in a meditative state.” – Egon

How has yoga benefitted you off the mat?

After working this hard, I eat healthier. I’m not going to have a cheeseburger or pizza after yoga. I also have more energy during the day and the practice is a great stress reliever.

No matter what the rest of my day looks like, I know I’ve done something great for myself by going to the hot room.” – Egon

RHY student of the month of January 2016: Egon Van Den Berg

Do you notice a change in your physical, mental, emotional and or spiritual body from a regular yoga practice?

FI have lost weight and firmed up. Most important of all, I have made a total commitment to yoga. I call it my three C’s: commitment, consistency, completion. To that end, I have made a total commitment to improving my practice. I divide my time between Austin, TX and Newport Beach. When I’m here I do the 80-minute class daily. This past summer I was here for 2 months, and I was able to practice daily for 56 straight days.

I know yoga is a personal thing and it’s not a competition, but if it were, I would come in last in form. My injuries limit what I can do in some postures. However, I have made a personal commitment on completion. Each day my goal is to get through the entire practice without any unscheduled savasanas. In 56 classes I only took a break twice, each for less that two minutes” – Egon

Have you tried other styles of yoga? What makes Radiant Hot Yoga your preferred place of practice?

I have tried Bikram, Vinyasa, Ashtanga and other variations. Some were not heated rooms, so no sweating. In some studios, instructors did their own thing so the practices varied greatly.

None of them were half the challenge of this practice, and I was never really motivated, so I didn’t go consistently. Some studios had as few as 6 students in a class. It was like going to a dance where no one showed up. No energy in the room.

Here, with 30 people in the classes, there is real energy in the room. In Austin I have never found a studio that offers what Radiant Hot Yoga offers. Besides the practice itself, all of the instructors are professional, consistent, passionate, friendly, helpful, and encouraging. I love them all. Even the members are friendly. It’s a real community. I’m so into it that I brought my daughter Gabby in and now she’s a Radiant Hot Yogi.

I want to thank Darlene for creating this fabulous experience and honoring me as the male yogi of the month.” – Egon

How Radiant Hot Yoga changed my life... Interview with Jenna

What benefits were you hoping to receive from your yoga practice?

I had no expectations when I started practicing yoga on a regular basis. I have always been extremely active, and at times a bit on the extreme side with exercise. By the time I started yoga as my primary form of exercise, I had run two marathons, was into heavy weight lifting, and boxing.

When I began regular yoga practice, my body was ready for the “break”, and I was at a point where I needed the mind/body connection. I discovered that the “high” from yoga was much more calm, peaceful, and easier on the body. Exactly what I needed!” – Jenna

How has yoga and your practice exceeded your expectations?

Like mentioned, I’ve always been addicted to the “high” you get from a great work out. With yoga, I get the high, I feel more balanced, relaxed and connected. My thinking is much clearer after class, plus I get to hear all the positive affirmations the teacher says for an hour! Being reminded of how limitless and purposeful I am is defiantly an added bonus!” – Jenna

RHY-student-of-month-november-jenna-lobos-1

How has yoga benefitted you off the mat?

It always amazes me what three or four sun salutations and a down dog can do! Yoga has taught me that no matter how I am feeling at any given moment, I am able to stop and do some easy poses or take some very deep breaths, to balance my body. Breathing is such a simple yet profound act for the body. I know the routine so well, I can implement this any time of the day. I am very grateful for my yoga practice for this reason.” – Jenna

Do you notice a change in your physical, mental, emotional and or spiritual body from a regular yoga practice?

Truth be told, at one time, I exercised only to look good in a bathing suit, that’s just where my mind set was. The minute I changed my mind and intention to feel good versus look good, that is when my physical body changed. It was actually when I slowed down and started yoga is when I felt and looked (in my opinion) my best. I wasn’t trying so hard. Have you ever heard the phrase: “If you are trying hard, that is ego, if it is easy, that is spirit!”?

It took me a while to fully understand this, but yes, I do notice a physical change from a regular yoga practice. My spiritual lessons have come along the way. It’s a daily practice for mental and emotional balance, and yoga does help!” – Jenna

RHY-student-of-month-november-jenna-lobos-3

Have you tried other styles of yoga? What makes Radiant Hot Yoga your preferred place of practice?

Yes, I have tried Vinyasa, Hatha and Kundalini yoga. They all serve the body differently, and I like them all, but what I love about Radiant Hot Yoga is, that it gives me the challenging work-out that I crave, the heat feels amazing to my body and the routine with the same postures allows me to stop thinking so much and be in my body, which relaxes my mind!” – Jenna
