Happy Thanksgiving Holiday from all of us at Radiant Hot Yoga

To our amazing Yoga Family,

As we enter into the holiday season I find myself filled with such gratitude. As I reflect on how truly blessed my daughters and I are for each and every single one of you.

Our Newport studio is just weeks away from celebrating its 5th year in business! I started with a vision to heal my daughters, to create a yoga family and to spread the healing power of yoga to as many people as possible. All of this has come to full fruition! I am in awe of the transformation the studio has gone through as well as my daughters & myself. In just a blink of an eye my little dream has become a reality far greater than I could have ever imagined.

Our second location in Irvine is coming up on 9 months, both studios have such a wonderful community, I couldn’t feel more blessed to be part of.

My vision was to create a safe heaven for all who walked through the doors as well as a place of healing, inspiration and connection. I am humbled by the outpouring of love letters and heartfelt messages that I have received over the years of how Radiant Hot Yoga has brought so much peace, healing and love to your life.

I know my daughters and I have been inspired by so many of you as well as healed by your unending love and encouragement. I want you to know that as we celebrate our blessings this holiday season our first and only thought is our overwhelming gratitude for all of you. You are the reason why my daughters and I wake up each morning excited to come to the studio and feel so fulfilled and blessed as we lay our heads down at the end of night. We do not have enough words to express our gratefulness to you, but please know each and everyone of you mean the world to us in ways you will never know.

May you have a wonderfully blessed holiday season with your family and friends.

From our heart to yours namaste,
The Radiant Hot Yoga family

Self-Care During the Holidays

by Rebecca Louise

I can’t believe that the holidays are rolling around again! This year, I have a lot to be thankful for: relationships, my career, my health… which brings me to the topic of self-care during the holidays.

It is so important that we take care of ourselves, especially during the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the New Year. We get so caught up with buying the right presents, preparing the holiday dinners (while trying to avoid the sweets), and running around like mad that we completely neglect our own well-being, and that’s no good!

Managing stress

The truth is, we can’t fully embrace the holiday spirit and the closeness of loved ones if we are sick, crazed, or completed wiped out. That’s why I make it a point to amp up my self-care routine during these busy months. Throughout the year I pay attention to getting good food, managing my stress, and working out regularly.

When the holidays come around, I boost my efforts and make them a top priority! One of the things that helps to keep me grounded is visiting Radiant Hot Yoga a few days a week. This is something I need!

Practice Yoga

Practicing yoga at least three times a week helps me to sweat the stresses out, keep my body warm and loose, and bring positive energy and balance to my body and mind. Going to Radiant Hot Yoga allows me to leave my worries at the door. Once I step on that mat, I am in my space, and only good vibes are allowed!

Plus, nothing feels better than flowing through the movements in a warm room when the weather outside is getting less predictable and more dreary.

Giving presents and gifts

Finally, when I take care of myself, I am better able to extend love and compassion to those I care most about. I know my loved ones can definitely notice when I’m not keeping myself healthy, because I’m not very fun to be around! In fact, a great gift for the holidays that I might be stuffing friends’ stocking with is a gift card for a yoga class!

During the holiday season especially, we want to be with our friends and family, so head over to the yoga studio and get into the flow.

One Thursday to Thanksgiving

Article by Rebecca Louise

Can you believe how quickly the year has gone by? The holiday rolls ‘round, family and friends gather, and the talk at the tables across America are of giving thanks for our year.

Gratitude, if seen as a year-round attitude, can make life simple, easy, playful, and fun for 365 days rather than putting it all into one go-around at the dinner table.

The word grateful is described by Webster’s dictionary as being warmly or deeply appreciative of kindness or benefits received; thankful. What if we put it into our daily practice, like brushing our teeth or getting dressed in the morning?

What if, we took a moment to say thank you for being alive and breathing when we woke up and put our feet on the floor? How would that change your day, your week, your month, your year?! No one is saying you have to jump out of bed with exuberance, although wouldn’t that be lovely, but a simple “thank you” to the creator, the universe for being alive. What a fantastic way to start the day!

When you are grateful for what you have, no matter how small or few they may be, you will begin to see those things instantly increase.

Focusing on and connecting to your breath is a useful way to be present, forgetting about the past and the future and just being in the moment. And it’s a great exercise to incorporate into a gratitude practice. When you are consciously breathing you are activating a part of your brain called the cerebral cortex that is a more evolved part of the brain. While breathing, you are sending impulses throughout the brain that impact your emotions creating a relaxing and balancing effect on the emotions, therefore elevating your consciousness from primitive or instinctual to more evolved or elevated.

Different states of mind can be produced by changing your patterns of breathing. About a month ago, I was on my way to an event and my car was hit from behind. Everyone was fine, and aside from a bit of a fender scratch which I knew could be fixed, I was more concerned with getting back on the road because I was one of the speakers! As the young woman who hit my car exited her vehicle, I could see she was in a panic. She couldn’t catch her words, her breathing was irregular, and I could see she was about to cry. So before we exchanged information, I gently put my hand on her arm and told her it was all going to be ok and to just take a nice, deep breath. Have you ever been really upset and someone who is with you tells you to breath and count to 10? Well, I’m about to get a little technical and tell you how that works and why that little exercise is good for you.

Believe it or not, slowing down your breath really does have an impact on your emotions and changing your mood and state of mind. The cerebral cortex, that evolved part of the brain I was talking about early is activated by slowing down your breath. Then it sends inhibitory impulses to the respiratory center of the brain that overflows into the hypothalamus, the part of the brain responsible for maintaining balance of everything – “status-quo” system wide and is concerned with emotions. This is why slowing down your breathing has a soothing, relaxing effect on your emotional state.

Breathing also helps to increase brain function by opening up capillaries, increasing the flow of oxygen, improving cerebral circulation and forcing the creation of new neural pathways so your brain is activated and awakened!

There are so many benefits to breathing, aside from the obvious, of course. Emotionally and energetically is can still your mind and relieve stress, physically is can eliminate joint pain and help with structural alignment and the postures and attitudes our bodies hold. Explore the many ways that a breathing practice can make a difference in your life and your yoga practice.
