How Radiant Hot Yoga changed my life... Interview with Frankie W.

What benefits were you hoping to receive from your yoga practice at Radiant Hot Yoga?

At the time I first signed up I was really wound up from several months of 90 hr work weeks. I was feeling like I was full of sand, my muscles ached all the time. I was hoping to stretch and release that tension, if nothing else go to physical exhaustion so I could actually relax, not just zone out. I was feeling defeated, sluggish and overwhelmed. I was looking for something to help me out of that feeling.” – Frankie W.

How has Yoga and your personal practice exceeded your expectations?

Not only was I able to relieve the stress from work, but also some of the aches and pains I’ve had for years have gone away. I had a muscle cramp in my right leg for a few years, I just though that was the way it is, I took muscle relaxants when it got really really bad. All that has changed and I haven’t taken those pills since I’ve started practice. Most importantly, being ADHD my whole life I have gotten a peaceful mindset during a one hour session that it would normally take me 4 or 5 hours of walking to do.” – Frankie W.

How has Yoga benefited you off the mat?

I am more peaceful and focused, I stand up and sit up straight. I am more present in my body. So I have had an eating disorder since I was little, I’ve spent my life gaining and losing the same 100 lbs over and over and over. One of the things that I’ve noticed is that I am aware of my body, I don’t feel like I am fighting against it anymore.

It has helped in my being present in my body and paying attention to my postures created an awareness I hadn’t had before.” – Frankie W.

Do you notice a change in your physical, mental, emotional, and/or spiritual body, from a regular Radiant Hot Yoga practice?

Not only has my physical body changed and become stronger, I have good posture now, my mental clarity and focus has been like never before, but there has been emotional benefits as well. Most recently, out of the blue, without any conscious effort on my part, a really painful childhood memory came out one day during class. I didn’t freak out but just let it ride like a wave, knowing it would pass and I cried for the first time about that issue. It’s never returned, and I feel like I made peace with that moment in my past.” – Frankie W.

Why is Radiant Hot Yoga your preferred studio/home away from home?

Do you remember that TV show Cheers? It’s nice to go where everyone knows your name. The staff at the studio are a direct result of Darlene’s intention of creating not just another yoga studio but a community for those who choose to call Radiant their home. I am so honored to call RHY my home studio.” – Frankie W.

What is your favorite yoga pose, and why?

Favorite Yoga Pose? Downward dog. When I first started I couldn’t do it for more than a few seconds and had to use my fist as it hurt my hands to hold myself up. Now, I feel so powerful in that position. My upper body strength is so different than when I started.” – Frankie W.

Meet one of Radiant Hot Yoga’s inspiring teachers, Ashley D.

When and why did you begin practicing yoga?

I began practicing hot yoga in 2006. Yoga has had a profound impact on my life by providing me with a deeper understanding and appreciation for one’s self and others. Although my practice started because of the physical benefits, today I practice daily for the inner work out, to connect to myself and release everyday stresses.” – Ashley D.

What made you fall in love with Radiant Hot Yoga?

I love Radiant! And for so many reasons!! The heat, the teachers, the people, the entire community of yogis are friendly and supportive. I enjoy the experience of each class being different and challenging, yet somehow exactly what I need for that day. It is the highlight of my day!” – Ashley D.

How has teaching yoga changed your life?

Teaching has been one of the best gifts in my life! To have the opportunity to teach, connect, and motivate while living my passion is a dream come true. Teaching is the best – it has enriched and enhanced my life tremendously. I am incredibly humbled and grateful to be be a part of Radiant and the amazing community.” – Ashley D.

When did you know you wanted to become a teacher at Radiant Hot Yoga?

I’ve always been a people person, and as long as I can remember have found myself wanting to positively impact and support others. I watched Teacher Training come and go for years- it always pulled on my heart, but I was too busy and committed to work to participate until I made the decision in 2016 to to commit to Teacher Training “no matter what”.” – Ashley D.

What did Teacher Training mean to you and how did it change your life?

It was truly an extraordinary experience, physically, mentally, socially and spiritually. 8-weeks and 200 hours of intense training not only learning so much about yoga, the niyamas, and yamas, and the body but also a deeper understanding of the self. I am so grateful to have been part of the  teacher training and created so many strong bonds and memories with friends that will last forever.” – Ashley D.

What are a few of your favorite things to do outside of yoga?

Outside of the studio, I spend my time with my husband, dogs, friends, and family. I have a love for the beach, and enjoy being in the water. Music, traveling, and going to new places are some of my favorite experiences.” – Ashley D.

What is one of your most cherished moments since you’ve become a teacher?

There have been many everlasting, and very special moments made in studio since becoming a teacher. I’ll never forget my first class, I was so nervous, and it was a good size class!

Darlene and some dear friends were in the room. As soon as we got into table top something clicked and came over me, it was like an out of body experience- and I was watching myself teach. It was such an amazing feeling and the energy lasted the whole day. At that point, I finally had a instinct feeling that I was doing exactly what I was suppose to be doing in life.” – Ashley D.

If there was one last thing you’d like to share with your radiant students, what would you say?!

“Ego says once everything falls into place, I’ll find peace.” Spirit says, “Find your peace, and everything will fall into place.” – Ashley D.

How Radiant Hot Yoga changed my life... Interview with Emily O.

What benefits were you hoping to receive from your yoga practice at Radiant Hot Yoga?

I first started coming to Radiant a few months after I moved here by myself from across the country. I was feeling very lonely and my job was stressing me out. My mom encouraged me to get back to my roots and take a yoga class. I needed to calm my mind, destress and center myself internally.” – Emily O.

How has Yoga and your personal practice exceeded your expectations?

I have always liked yoga, but it wasn’t until I came to Radiant did I truly fall in love with it. I actually crave my mat every single day. Physically, my body is more flexible than I’ve ever been in my life, but mentally I am so much stronger, calmer and happier than I ever thought possible.” – Emily O.

How has Yoga benefited you off the mat?

The breathing has really helped me off the mat. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, stressed or anxious, I know I can always come back to my breath. Just like in the room, my breathing has become a calming thing for me. It keeps me balanced and centered, even when life around me gets crazy!” – Emily O.

Do you notice a change in your physical, mental, emotional, and/or spiritual body, from a regular Radiant Hot Yoga practice?

I come to Radiant almost every single day. In addition to the physical changes I’ve seen in my body from the challenging workout, I have noticed so much internal change from the “work in”. My emotional, spiritual and mental health has improved drastically. Not only do I feel more centered and calm, but I also feel more confident. I have a more positive outlook on situations in life, and a more relaxed mindset.

Friends and family have even noticed a difference, and it all circles back to what I’ve learned in yoga; being present and focusing on the beauty in life. There are too many beautiful, positive things happening in the world around us to be tainted by negative or anxious thoughts!” – Emily O.

Why is Radiant Hot Yoga your preferred studio/home away from home?

Radiant is most definitely my home away from home. I moved here from Ohio by myself. I knew nobody and felt very alone. At one of the most challenging times in my life, I found Radiant.

Everyone here was so welcoming and kind. I immediately felt safe here; like I finally had a place where I belonged in Newport Beach, my own little safe haven on my mat!! I have made some incredible bonds with some truly amazing people at this magical place of healing.” – Emily O.

What is your favorite yoga pose, and why?

My favorite pose is definitely standing bow. It is always so challenging for me, yet I feel so strong and confident whenever I am in it!” – Emily O.
