How Radiant Hot Yoga changed my life... Interview with Megan

When did you first start doing yoga?

“I am not a naturally flexible person, nor did I ever excel in any type of gymnastics, so it took me a long time to get over my apprehension about taking on an activity that I knew would be a struggle for me.

I was forced to do yoga as a part of a home-fitness video program in the last few years, but none of it was heated, and it was always the portion of the weekly routine that I dreaded the most.

I didn’t step into an actual yoga studio until April 2013, at the age of 41. It took a friend of mine about 4 months to convince me to go!” – Megan S.

How has yoga changed your life? (your mood, body, stress level, etc)

“Yoga really has given me a space that I can look forward to escaping to, to remind me to simplify. I have a hard time shutting off my mind, but hot yoga has taught me the benefit of focusing on the present moment and just breathing. As soon as my mind wanders, my balance and strength falter.

I struggle more with staying present mentally than I do with the actual poses, but I know that each new class is another opportunity to practice my mental and physical discipline.

If someone had told me a year ago that not only would I come to enjoy hot yoga, but that I would complete a 30-day challenge, I wouldn’t have believed them.” – Megan S.

Why do you think everyone should try hot yoga?

“Growth comes through change, and changes are brought about very quickly with challenges. Every day in the studio presents a different type of challenge:

  • Can I make it through an entire class without taking an extra break?
  • Can I go deeper into a pose than I ever have before?
  • Can I remember to be thankful for a body that responds to physical challenges, instead of loathing it because it doesn’t “do” what I want it to or “look” the way I think it should?

You face yourself in that yoga studio — many of the challenges are self-imposed. Once you recognize that, you will grow in ways that may not always be immediately apparent, but in ways that *will* make you stronger and more resilient.” – Megan S.

What makes Radiant Hot Yoga so special?

“Everyone at Radiant Hot Yoga is incredibly supportive and genuinely caring. From the very first time I stepped into the studio, I felt welcomed and appreciated.

What advice do you have for new students who want to try hot yoga?

“Jump in with both feet and give it a go! Keep an open mind, and remember that this is a practice you can do for the rest of your life. Don’t feel intimidated by other students who seem much “stronger” or “better” than you perceive yourself to be; everyone starts somewhere, no two people’s journeys are the same, and you ARE much stronger than you think you are.

You will always be progressing, even on the days when it feels like you’re not. Just because you don’t always feel like you’re growing, it doesn’t mean that you’re *not* growing.” –  Megan S.

What is your favorite posture and why?

“When it’s just me, side-plank is my favorite. The balance it requires can be very tricky, so I feel excited if I can make it through without wobbling or losing my balance.

However, with the assistance of a teacher holding my feet down, I absolutely love cobra. The feeling of peeling myself high off the floor using only the strength of my lower back is one of the most accomplished and exhilarating that I have ever felt! I go through the rest of the day feeling like Wonder Woman. :)” –  Megan S.
