How Radiant Hot Yoga changed my life... Interview with Katie, Liz and Bob
What inspired you to try hot yoga?
“Seeing Sienna’s transformation through her practice and teacher training inspired me to try it out for myself!” – Katie
“Katie was so enthusiastic about Yoga and I knew that I needed more than what I could get from the elliptical machine in our garage. It was also a nice mother/daughter thing to do.” – Liz
“Liz and Katie really pushed me into it. I was really more interested in a “serious workout” like Crossfit, and not some easy stretching. Little did I know….” – Bob
How long have you been practicing at Radiant Hot Yoga, (or yoga in general)?
“I’ve been practicing for a little over two months.” – Katie
“A little over 2 months.” – Liz
“At Radiant Hot Yoga for about two months. Just very minimal yoga before – two classes at Bikram yoga probably ten years ago but didn’t really like it at all.” – Bob
How has Radiant Hot Yoga changed the way you feel, mentally and physically? Are you in better moods? Do you feel happier? Etc.
“The difference is huge! I remember about a month into my practice, I just realized one day- “Oh my god, I’m so deeply in love with myself!” Besides the overwhelming self acceptance, I’m not moody like I was before; instead, I’m just more happy overall. Even through my AP testing these last few weeks, I haven’t felt too stressed. Physically, the changes were immediate in that I was always more awake and I got pretty toned until I got a job in a bakery with free donuts…” – Katie
“When Katie first persuaded me to do hot yoga with her (in a 105 degree room–with humidity!), I thought she was nuts. Not the kind of workout that a menopausal woman would put at the top of her list.
She made me promise to go at least 3 times. The first time I went, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror – I was reminded of the classic circus act in which an elephant balances on one foot on top of a tiny stool.
Over the last two months, I have noticed increased flexibility and more motivation to pursue a healthy diet and I am happy to report that the elephant looks a lot slimmer!” – Liz
“Yes, very clear changes from practicing at RHY. The most visible is losing about 25 pounds. Also, very unexpectedly, my skin is not nearly as dry as it was before. I was exfoliating my face – not something I ever thought I’d do as a guy – and my elbows were super scaly.
Now all my skin is really smooth. On the mental side, and find it easier to let things go, and if something upsetting happens, it’s much easier to just get back to being level and easygoing. I’ve noticed that things are less stressful around the house in general.” – Bob
Why do you think hot yoga is something that is good for the entire family?
“Through studying and work, I don’t spend that much time with my parents. It really is lovely to sweat and almost die together for an hour or so a couple of times a week. It’s also great support to live with people who understand the benefits of yoga.” – Katie
“With very busy schedules it is nice to find an activity that we can squeeze into our schedules. Even if one of us is out of town or busy, there is usually another family member to go with.” – Liz
“Yes! It’s very helpful to have other people prompt me to go, so that I don’t miss a day. Also we can talk about poses, etc. It’s a good way to connect. And with everyone being so busy with work and school, it’s nice to spend some time together.” – Bob
What is your favorite part about coming to your mat at Radiant Hot Yoga everyday?
“These classes are one of the only times of my day when I don’t have to worry or even think about anything. I can feel the love and support in the room and I fill up with love myself.” – Katie
“I would ordinarily dread a crowded workout class, but all of the teachers and students have been very welcoming and encouraging to me despite my sub-par practice. As a novice, it is wonderful to be inspired by incredibly fit and skilled yogis, without feeling any intimidation.
For me, bumbling through all the poses is a victory in itself, and even tiny improvements are very rewarding.” – Liz
“It’s really the highlight of my day, and I do go every day that I’m in town. It’s such a great feeling to go and know that I’m doing something to help myself physically, mentally, and spiritually. I like seeing the progress and just experiencing all the poses.
And especially the final shivasana. The drive home is so relaxing and peaceful, no matter how the rest of my day went.” – Bob
What is your favorite pose and why?
“My favorites are standing head to knee and tree pose. (Aww like father, like daughter).
I can see the most improvement in the standing pose and I can focus easiest in that posture.
In tree pose, I feel like I expand to fill my entire body. I’m most alive then.” – Katie
“The supine twist is my favorite, because after an exhausting series of stretches, poses, flows and abs, if feels so good to twist your spine.” – Liz
“I really like tree pose. Looking up, arms stretched out, it really helps me to feel the “attitude of gratitude.” – Bob
Do you have any advice for people that are on the fence about coming to try hot yoga?
“Go go go!!
Nobody’s going to look at you, I promise. They’re too focused on the heat and the poses. When you first start, commit and try to get someone to go with you. The two week offer encourages you to keep it up your practice when it’s most difficult.” – Katie
“Just get yourself to your mat and put yourself in Radiant Hot Yoga’s hands. When I was on my elliptical machine, I was a clock-watcher, but in class, I am too focused on each stretch or pose to divert my attention to such trivial persuits.” – Liz
“Yes, just try it!
You might have ideas of what it is, and what it isn’t. But until you get on the mat and go through a class, you won’t know how much you get out of it. And Radiant Hot Yoga really seems to have a unique set of poses and moves that work very well for the work-out and work-in.
Radiant Hot Yoga is also very non-competitive so don’t worry about being a beginner; we were all there once.” – Bob
