How Radiant Hot Yoga changed my life... Interview with Frankie W.

What benefits were you hoping to receive from your yoga practice at Radiant Hot Yoga?

At the time I first signed up I was really wound up from several months of 90 hr work weeks. I was feeling like I was full of sand, my muscles ached all the time. I was hoping to stretch and release that tension, if nothing else go to physical exhaustion so I could actually relax, not just zone out. I was feeling defeated, sluggish and overwhelmed. I was looking for something to help me out of that feeling.” – Frankie W.

How has Yoga and your personal practice exceeded your expectations?

Not only was I able to relieve the stress from work, but also some of the aches and pains I’ve had for years have gone away. I had a muscle cramp in my right leg for a few years, I just though that was the way it is, I took muscle relaxants when it got really really bad. All that has changed and I haven’t taken those pills since I’ve started practice. Most importantly, being ADHD my whole life I have gotten a peaceful mindset during a one hour session that it would normally take me 4 or 5 hours of walking to do.” – Frankie W.

How has Yoga benefited you off the mat?

I am more peaceful and focused, I stand up and sit up straight. I am more present in my body. So I have had an eating disorder since I was little, I’ve spent my life gaining and losing the same 100 lbs over and over and over. One of the things that I’ve noticed is that I am aware of my body, I don’t feel like I am fighting against it anymore.

It has helped in my being present in my body and paying attention to my postures created an awareness I hadn’t had before.” – Frankie W.

Do you notice a change in your physical, mental, emotional, and/or spiritual body, from a regular Radiant Hot Yoga practice?

Not only has my physical body changed and become stronger, I have good posture now, my mental clarity and focus has been like never before, but there has been emotional benefits as well. Most recently, out of the blue, without any conscious effort on my part, a really painful childhood memory came out one day during class. I didn’t freak out but just let it ride like a wave, knowing it would pass and I cried for the first time about that issue. It’s never returned, and I feel like I made peace with that moment in my past.” – Frankie W.

Why is Radiant Hot Yoga your preferred studio/home away from home?

Do you remember that TV show Cheers? It’s nice to go where everyone knows your name. The staff at the studio are a direct result of Darlene’s intention of creating not just another yoga studio but a community for those who choose to call Radiant their home. I am so honored to call RHY my home studio.” – Frankie W.

What is your favorite yoga pose, and why?

Favorite Yoga Pose? Downward dog. When I first started I couldn’t do it for more than a few seconds and had to use my fist as it hurt my hands to hold myself up. Now, I feel so powerful in that position. My upper body strength is so different than when I started.” – Frankie W.

What benefits were you hoping to receive from your yoga practice at Radiant Hot Yoga?

I first started coming to Radiant a few months after I moved here by myself from across the country. I was feeling very lonely and my job was stressing me out. My mom encouraged me to get back to my roots and take a yoga class. I needed to calm my mind, destress and center myself internally.” – Emily O.

How has Yoga and your personal practice exceeded your expectations?

I have always liked yoga, but it wasn’t until I came to Radiant did I truly fall in love with it. I actually crave my mat every single day. Physically, my body is more flexible than I’ve ever been in my life, but mentally I am so much stronger, calmer and happier than I ever thought possible.” – Emily O.

How has Yoga benefited you off the mat?

The breathing has really helped me off the mat. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, stressed or anxious, I know I can always come back to my breath. Just like in the room, my breathing has become a calming thing for me. It keeps me balanced and centered, even when life around me gets crazy!” – Emily O.

Do you notice a change in your physical, mental, emotional, and/or spiritual body, from a regular Radiant Hot Yoga practice?

I come to Radiant almost every single day. In addition to the physical changes I’ve seen in my body from the challenging workout, I have noticed so much internal change from the “work in”. My emotional, spiritual and mental health has improved drastically. Not only do I feel more centered and calm, but I also feel more confident. I have a more positive outlook on situations in life, and a more relaxed mindset.

Friends and family have even noticed a difference, and it all circles back to what I’ve learned in yoga; being present and focusing on the beauty in life. There are too many beautiful, positive things happening in the world around us to be tainted by negative or anxious thoughts!” – Emily O.

Why is Radiant Hot Yoga your preferred studio/home away from home?

Radiant is most definitely my home away from home. I moved here from Ohio by myself. I knew nobody and felt very alone. At one of the most challenging times in my life, I found Radiant.

Everyone here was so welcoming and kind. I immediately felt safe here; like I finally had a place where I belonged in Newport Beach, my own little safe haven on my mat!! I have made some incredible bonds with some truly amazing people at this magical place of healing.” – Emily O.

What is your favorite yoga pose, and why?

My favorite pose is definitely standing bow. It is always so challenging for me, yet I feel so strong and confident whenever I am in it!” – Emily O.

I started coming to Radiant during a time in my life when I was experiencing a lot of stress during my last year of graduate school and when I was planning my wedding, and I was hoping to regain mental and physical balance. I started coming to Radiant a few times a week for the “work in” and the work out was a fantastic added benefit!” – Sara

Do you notice a change in your physical, mental, emotional and or spiritual body from a regular yoga practice?

The biggest change I’ve noticed since coming to yoga is my mental state. I became so much calmer and less stressed after I became a regular Radiant yogi. My mind stopped racing and I became so much more at peace. I also noticed huge changes in my physical shape – going to Radiant regularly has given me my best body ever!” – Sara

Have you tried other styles of yoga? What makes Radiant Hot Yoga your preferred studio?

I’ve tried many different yoga classes, from Bikram to Vinyasa. Nothing even compares to Radiant in my opinion. One of the best things about Radiant is the amazing, kind, loving staff. I feel at home and with family when I walk into Radiant. They all truly care and make an effort to know their students.

Radiant’s classes are also different in that you feel so comfortable during class, not focused on competing with others in the class and being able to focus on yourself. I can’t imagine going to any other yoga studio!” – Sara

What benefits were you hoping to receive from your yoga practice?

I was looking for a fun way to get a good workout and engage in a healthier lifestyle. I’m the type of person that needs to be held accountable during my workouts so being in a group environment for a designated period of time is crucial to my exercise.” – Adam

How has yoga and your practice exceeded your expectations?

My first goal was to get a good workout as a regular part of my week. But yoga is a lot more than just a workout. It has provided me with consistent time throughout the week where I can unplug and mentally reset.” – Adam

Yoga has helped me relax and to put things into a new perspective in my daily life. It’s a phenomenal workout and “ work in” as Radiant calls it. My days are much more productive and fulfilling after investing time in my physical and mental shape through yoga.” – Adam

I’ve been practicing hot yoga for over 5 years. I’ve tried other types of yoga along the way but they haven’t provided the physical and mental needs that I am looking for. How Radiant Hot Yoga changed my life... Interview with Catherine Green

What benefits were you hoping to receive from your yoga practice?

I started practicing Vinyasa style yoga about ten years ago when I was living in Portland, Oregon.

At the time, I was running and swimming a great deal and consistently experiencing muscle and joint pain. I remember that my first yoga class was a revelation.

I had grown up dancing, but not actively concentrating on how the poses felt as opposed to how they looked. After my first week of yoga, I began attending classes more frequently and soon became a devotee.” – Catherine

How has yoga and your practice exceeded your expectations?

From the outset, yoga has exceeded my expectations in so many ways. It has improved my posture, my physical resiliency, and increased my energy. I always look forward to class. When I step into the hot room, I immediately feel both relaxed and ready to work, stretch, and grow as a person.” – Catherine

How has yoga benefited you off the mat?

I have a very busy life, having moved back home to Orange County three years ago. Since then, I’ve launched a marketing business, written a novel, and started performing as a classical soloist and a jazz singer. I’m also a single mom, so time is precious.

But getting to yoga daily or weekly is what keeps me present and focused when I’m off the mat. Since I’ve started doing the sculpt classes as well, yoga has replaced other forms of exercise, which gives me more time during the day.” – Catherine

Do you notice a change in your physical, mental, emotional and or spiritual body from a regular yoga practice?

Yes, when I’m practicing regularly, I can see that I have more mental clarity in all situations. It has given me the ability to stay calm and centered, even in the face of challenge and adversity. The concept behind the physical branch of yoga is that it calms the body so you can meditate and focus.

And yoga has done just that for me. It has also strengthened my ability to connect with other people and led to an interest in a variety of spiritual practices, all of which have been greatly enriching.” – Catherine

Have you tried other styles of yoga? What makes Radiant Hot Yoga your preferred place of practice?

I’ve tried many styles – Vinyasa, Iyengar, Bikram, Ashtanga, Mysore, Yin, and have seen benefits from all. I’m drawn to the heated classes at Radiant because I find I can move deeper into the poses and receive a very satisfying physical and mental work out.

I enjoy the mix of Vinyasa and Bikram styles as they provide a nice variety of poses. The sculpt classes are also a favorite, combining yoga with strength training and cardio. And of course, the atmosphere at the studio is so warm and welcoming, and the teachers so caring, it’s always a pleasure to walk in and see so many smiling faces.  Radiant truly is an exceptional studio.” – Catherine

Do you notice a change in your physical, mental, emotional and or spiritual body from a regular yoga practice?

Absolutely. I feel a mental, emotional, and spiritual peace after each practice. I still can’t put my finger on it, but something happens – something is released in the sweat that pours out of us in each class.  The crazy thing is before Radiant, I was not a heat person at all.  Now I put up with heat a lot better and as far as yoga goes – I crave it.  I’ve also changed the way I think about exercise.
